What Austrian dishes do you recommend

What Austrian dishes do you recommend?
I am planning on attending a language school in Vienna, Austria next summer and since I'm at work, hungry, and bored my thoughts drifted to food. Sooo, I thought I'd ask what Austrian dishes you'd all recommend I try during my stay! :-)

I'll tell you the most famous...."Wiener Schnitzel"...(Sacher Torte as the ultimate dessert ...by the way)Well back to Schnitzel..and you don't have to be in Vienna to get creative on this one at home: You can use Veal, Chicken or Pork filets thinly cut...then u put flour in one bowel, scrambled eggs in the second bowl , plain bread crumbs in the third bowl...now u season the meat with salt and pepper and start the breading: slide the meatslices through the flour first ..then through the eggs and then through the breadcrumbs ...next fry in pan with lots of butter...enjoy ...cranberry compott tastes very good with it ...I cook this quiet a lot for my family and friends and they all go crazy over it..lovin it Here's other must haves for when you are there in Austria: Filled meat dumplings, beef gulasch, leberkaese, well you'll find out I better stop now cause I'm already trooling..lol
2 :
Wiener Schnitzel is definately your best choice... it is made from veal, and veal only. Not chicken or pork or whatever starz said. Also, unless you go to Germany you wont find cranberry compott anywhere with your schnitzel, try mayonayse salat instead. Schweinebraten mit Kraut & knoedel or Krenfleisch in the winter. Desserts you should try are Germknoedel or Kaiserschmarnn...

I recommend "Steirischer Backhendlsalat" (Styrian Salad with fried chicken) It typically consists of breaded and fried chicken strips served on a nice selection of different types of lettuce, tomatoes and other veggies. Sometimes there is also potato salad, but without mayo. What makes it "Styrian" (Styria is a provice in the south of Austria) is Kürbiskernöl (pumpkin seed oil). Be prepared - it looks like old motor oil when it comes out of the bottle and turns a rich green when stirred. Taste-wise it reminds me of walnuts, and it also has a roasted flaovor to it. Yummy!

I have only been to Austria once and was with some locals that their son ordered a macaroni and cheese type dish made with what they called stinky cheese and I tell you this he was sitting 10 feet away and when they brought the dish out my throat started to gag, they say it is good but you need to get it past you nose.
5 :
Beside the world famous Wiener Schnitzel (which I don't really like but think any person who visits Austria should try) and an Apfel Strudel, I would recommend Steirischer Backhendlsalat, Zwiebelrostbraten ( a thin slice of top sirloin topped with flour-dipped fried onions), Kaesespaetzle (literally translated into English: little cheese sparrows:-). However, this dish is something for the cold months of the year as a real calorie-bomb. Don't forget to order a glass of Schnaps afterwards, it will do your digestion good. Go for Griecherl-, Zwetschken- or Marillenschnaps). For dessert, try Palatschinken (austrian pancakes) or just go to that famous Oberlaa Cafe in Vienna and choose anything you like from those specialities they offer. If you love chocolate, make sure you get that piece of Sacher tart, but in a cafe of Sacher Hotel ONLY, as this is where the tart "was born" and they still keep the original recipe a secret. The tart DOES taste different there and is simple beyond delicious.

You got some good answers, Kitty, but here are a couple more from an Austrian-American who spends a lot of time in Austria. Hungarian goulash is usually very good in Vienna. This is beef cooked forever with onions and spices, especially paprika, and the gravy is usually to die for. Pork roast is another dish that hardly ever disappoints. As an American, you'll probably want to trim off some more fat, like I do, but there is usually plenty of luscious meat left. You can usually get very good trout, if you like fish. They have something called "salmon trout" (Lachsforelle), which is a trout with pink flesh, and very good. Another thing is soup. They make great soups, especially beef broth. A beef soup with vegetables makes an excellent lunch. Try beef soup with "Fritatten", those are left-over crepes cut into ribbons and put in the soup like noodles. In many Austrian restaurants, you still order items separately. You might order meat and a salad, or meat, potatoes, and a salad, or fish, dumplings, and a salad. This is not always true in touristy places, where they cater to people who expect a dish all put together. Make sure you know which way it is, or you might end up with a piece of meat and nothing else, or a plate full of food plus side dishes. It is perfectly fine to ask how the food comes -- even Austrians do that. Do you know that Austrians usually eat dinner at noon and a small supper at night? That is why offices and stores are often shut from noon to 2 PM. Austria has really great sausages and cold cuts, potato salad, cole slaw, and such, so supper can be a real adventure, and you don't have to go out to a restaurant.

Japan Holiday Work Visa Question

Japan Holiday Work Visa Question?
I am sooo close to getting a job in japan, but one thing is holding me back, and thus this question. I am a Citizen of Austria and America. Now, i know that SEVERAL countries are offered Holiday Work Visas for 6-12 months. I know France and Germany and Australia are all offered it, but what about Austra?? Germany and France are RIGHT NEXT to Austria!! ^_^ Is there really no mercy for Austria with Visas? Cheers

I checked the MOFA webpage and no Austria is not listed, it's not done on location rather goverenment ties. Apparently Austria isn't that interested in fostering a better relationship with Japan, or vice versa. And Australians can go for 18 months. The working Holiday visa is 6 months and the amount of times you can extend depends on what country you are from.

Every Australian University has a Career Centre. Permission to work in Australia is no longer attached to the Australian student visa if the visa is granted outside Australia. But they can get a new student visa with work rights after they begin their own course at an Australian University. They only required paying AUD $50 application fee for the new visa. This new visa allows the student to work 20hrs a week when school is in and longer during the school holidays.

hi , I am an indian in germany, so I think I would be able to help. on campus jobs in my university are rare I think it is the same in austria as well,german/austrian universities have very limited studenten arbiet austria has uni's and fachhochshule's it depends where you want to study. Part time jobs are hard to come by it also depends on the city that you are living in if you dont get one in university but your resident city is big then your chances are higher. right now austrian universities are only charging 360 euros per sem for fees which is going to be increased shortly. Knowledge of german is very helpfull but austrians have a very accented german , its more closer to bayerisch than higher deutsche. I would still suggest you to try for USA that is the best place to try but if you still want austria then, Veile gluck!!!!!!!!

Yeah games are region coded, so you are either gonna have to import US games or have your 360 modified to play all region coded games, you are also going to need a transformer cuz the power outage is different. You are better off selling it and getting one over there.

The reaction by who or which country? Which declaration of war? Austria has been involved in several wars in the 18th-20th centuries. For WWI, Austria had four separate declarations of war with various countries. The reaction to Austria declaring war against Serbia was Russia, Germany, France, Britain and the other allied countries mobilizing their armies and falling into the war like toppled dominoes, and Austria declaring war against Russia a week later on Aug. 6th.

For just small electronics, just get an off the shelf 50Wtravel transformer. It will probably have the most common two round pin male and US type female. For your hair appliances, get a solid state high-power converter.

How to become a paramedic in the US

How to become a paramedic in the US?
Hey guys I'm from Austria, considering immigration to the US. I'm working as a "paramedic" (its called Sanitäter compareable with EMT-B i think) here. Which degree do I need to be able to work in the US? And how are my chances to get a job?
Other - Education - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The EMT-B in the U.S. only requires about 110 hours of training and there are schools which offer this in 3 weeks of class. In 48 states, the next level, Paramedic, does not require a degree of any type. Usually the hours of training are from 600 - 1200. The state of Texas requires only 600 and there are a couple of schools that offer the program over 3 months. The places to start looking for specific answers to see how much of your education will transfer are the state you want to move to since every state has its own requirement and the National Registry for EMTs (NREMT) which is an exam accepted by most states. This is a certifying exam and then you apply to the state for their certification or licensure. To be honest, due to the low entry requirements for EMTs and Paramedics, there are many flooding the market. EMTs especially are in abundance. But the turn over is high because most did not know what patient care involved and maybe were too young or immature after just a couple weeks of first aid training. In the U.S. EMS is largely Fire service based. So to be a Paramedic in may areas of the country and to make a decent living wage, you may need to be a FireFighter. To get accepted by the better departments, it is very competitive and most applicants will have their Paramedic cert from a short training program when they apply.

Hello, Me and my family wants to go Vienna for tourism and visiting my first cousin ( he is working at IAEA ) so the Austria Embassy in our country (SYRIA) needs an electronic invitation which sent by the invited throw immigration and passport in Vienna , so we need the full address of the immigration in Vienna which call ( MASSGAT 35 ) ?? PLEASE ANY IDEA??? HELP!

You don't need to contact the immigration in Vienna, this has to be done by your cousin living in Vienna. I have translated the part in reference to private visits published by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior to the best of my knowledge. Electronic Statement of Guaranty (EVE): A visa may still be granted to a foreigner who does not have sufficient / proven resources to cover the intended stay in Austria, if, due to the Statement of Guaranty of a person with residence in the federal territory, the bearing of all costs seems to be assured. This was done by the means of a notarized Statement of Guaranty in the past. Now private hosts have to see the competent alien police authority (Bundespolizeidirektion, Bezirkshauptmannschaft, in Vienna the respective district police headquarters) and submit a so-called free of charge Electronic Statement of Guaranty. The host declares - as before – to be willing to pay for all costs incurred to public entities, by the stay of visa applicant even if this goes beyond the period of the invitation. His statements regarding credit quality must be demonstrated before the alien police authorities. Private hosts have to bring the following documents: Identity document, registration form, appropriate proof of income, lease, or similar, if there is evidence of concern about existing obligations, loans or similar, as well as documents relating to the relationship with the visa applicant. The disclosure of the passport number of the visa applicant is requested. Following the submission of the EVE the host will be given an ID number which he in turn will tell the visa applicant. The visa applicant can submit the visa application at the earliest 48 hours after submission of the EVE to the competent Austrian diplomatic authority abroad and shall state the ID number under which the authority can retrieve the EVE. Police In Austria

Police In Austria?
To become a police officer in austria do you have to be an austrian citizen? I plan to move to austria but I am getting a degree in criminal justice which usually means police work, and if I cannot become a police officer in austria until I am a citizen that will be 10 years of living there to become one.. So I would need a job to do in the 10 years of time I have to wait... Any ideas? I will be taking the schooling in austria, not in the US. And I speak German fluently, so everything is good except for what to do with a degree in CJ when you cannot become an officer..
Law Enforcement & Police - 2 Answers

There are few countries that will let you be a police officer without being a citizen, however, there are other types of jobs such as corrections or some kind of inspector for a social service such as backround checks on applicants. I would hope that you can speak the prevailing language as that would help a lot. If you are getting a CJ degree in the US it is not going to be of much value there as the systems are very different. Hoepfully you are not moving to Austria to become a police officer as there must be an easier way to do this.
2 :
Remembering the police back home, I have to seriously doubt whether you actually need that CJ degree. They seemed dumb as rocks. You could see if maybe doing the mandatory military duty will get you the citizenship. Then you could also become military police (Feldjaeger)

Electric converter for European travel

Electric converter for European travel?
I'm going on a trip to Europe in two weeks or so, and I need an outlet converter that will work for both my ipod nano and my digital camera without blowing their circuits. It has to work in England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Lichtenstein. I have heard that many converters/adapters will surge and frazzle ipods, etc... Any suggestions? I need a brand or model.. something specific, not just voltage suggestions.
Packing & Preparation - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Not sure, but I believe those countries use a standard 250volt, 50 cycle power, so your converter must go from that to the present USA 120 volt 60 cycle supply. Best to check with supplier where you buy the converter.
2 :
Look on the chargers. If they say you can run them from 240V you just need plug adapters, and can likely get a kit with all the adapters you need. If the say only 120V, you need a converter transformer as well. A 50W/VA one will do.
3 :
You may just need a universal adapter for the plug. iPod adaptor should be 120~240Vac auto. Same thing with your camera. Check their charger voltage ratings. Cameras and iPods can be charged using USB chargers too.

What is the best or easiest way to obtain a green card

What is the best or easiest way to obtain a green card?
My boyfriend is Austrian and has lived in the U.S. for the past 6 years. He has recently been sent back to Austria for some reason. He is working on getting a green card but there are a few different methods of getting one. If anyone has any suggestions on which one would be best, please let me know. Thanks, ~Jeannie

1 :
There are too many to count. Of course if he was "sent back" by the US Government for overstaying his visa then he's barred for ten years and you may have to rejoin him in Austria. Or the UK. Or Canada. Otherwise there's the visa lottery; or if he becomes a minister of religion he can get a green card easily that way. Or an I visa (journalist for a recognized news outlet). Marriage is the next easiest. A diplomatic or government visa to work at his consulate or at the UN or another international organization is nice. Or secondment by an international firm, although that takes time it's a lot less time than a green card.
2 :
If he's been here 6 years, and has a clean record while here, there is a preferred alien status to apply for. It still has to be approved by INS, but it could help things move faster. The only other way is to marry the guy. "Sweetheart visa" may be another avenue.
3 :
you can marry him, but here's the thing, i know that the us embassy in japan makes it fast and easy to get a green card. you don't apply here in the states, you go to the actual embassy in that country. it's a lot of paperwork, but it's really fast (this is based off of the us embassy in japan)
4 :
get married is your best bet
5 :
Have him get an american girl pregnant. It's surefire 100% way to get him in the country indefinately. He's the father of an American so he's entitled to be with is offsprint in America. If you don't want to have his child (or someone else doesn't) then he can just apply and wait forever.
6 :
Too many choices, but most of them take a long time to get resolved. For starters, if he was sent back to Austria by the US HLS, then he is banned to enter the country for the next 10 years. Nothing to do about it, but to wait. Even if you marry him overseas, or you petition him under a Fiance K-1 visa, he would not be able to enter the country. If he is not in this position, your best bet is to have him try to come with a Fiance K-1 VISA, or if you marry him overseas, then you will have to start a Spousal petition procedure. Fiances can visit or live with their partners using a K-1 visa and can remain in the United States as long they observe a good social status. K-1 and Spousal petitons are time-consuming procedures and it will require lots of patience on your and his end. There are 2 basic steps to getting a K-1 visa. The 1st one is the petition, which is completed by the U.S. citizen, the 2nd step is the application which is the foreign citizen’s request for a K-1 visa stamp at their home country's U.S. consulate. Much of the fiance visa processing takes place at the U.S. consulate abroad. If ya'll not sure about tying the knot yet, then your second best bet is a F-1 student Visa. I met lot of foreigners in the MBA program at the University of Phoenix on this status, but I met also a bunch of foreigners in our local community college. If he goes on this venue, he can go for 2 years, and depending on his education, he can get a masters degree or an Associate's degree. After graduating he can apply for a job within the USA. The potential employer will issue a Help Wanted ad in 3 of the most well known employment newspapers (including the internet) to make sure that there not any Americans available to fill that position. If after a 30 days nobody meets the criteria, your boyfriend can be hired. He will be issued a work permit and his visa will change to H-1B. His employer would have to renew his work permit every year for the 3 years. On the fourth year he could not renew his work permit but he would have to apply for a permanent redidenceship. There are 98% chances he will get it. If he changes jobs before the fourth year, he will have to go throught the hiring process again with his new potential employer, but he would not have to start all over the 4th year waiting period. To get a F-1 student visa he needs to be accepted in a US acredited school. The school will send him a I-20 form notifying he has been accepted into their program. Before the school sends the I-20 form, he needs to prove that he has enough funds to support himself for the first 2 semesters. About $19K US will do it. He does not have to show this in cash, but showing that he have reliable sources where this money would come from (e.g. Loans, credit cards, properties, Health insurance contract and sponsorship agreements from relatives and significant others). Here is where your help comes handy. You can send a letter stating that you are going to sponsor him for as much as you pay in rent or mortgage and food expenses, since is very likely he will be living under your roof. Your living expenses could amount about $12K or more, depending on where you live and he can show that amount as part of his resources. NOTE: Students under M visas cannot undergo this process to become residents. Any way you go, it would take a long time, but these two choices are the fastest ones. Good luck.

Tax Question: US citizen working abroad

Tax Question: US citizen working abroad?
I will be going on an assignment overseas and have some tax questions. I'm a US citizen and own a house in my home state in the Northeast. I will be renting an apartment in Austria and working in Belgium during the workweek (flying back to Austria on weekends). I'll probably spend 192 days in Belgium, 144 days in Austria, 22 days in US and 7 days in the UK. I may do this for 1-2 years tops and then return to the US. Do I file taxes only in the USA? If I spend more time in the US, do I avoid paying taxes in these foreign countries? If so, how many days in the US? What would be the ideal set up for least tax liability, even if it means staying in one of these countries for longer. Ideally I would only owe US taxes, but wanted to know what the law says. Yearly salary would be over $100K. Employer is US based.

If you work in another country, you pay tax to that country. Within the EU, you would not have to pay tax to the country of residence, if different. If you are a US citizen, you must report ALL your income to the IRS, regardless of location where you worked. However, you can claim a deduction for the amount of tax paid to the country where you worked. Since European income taxes are generally higher than the US, this would probably bring your US tax liability down to zero. But you still have to file.

Is the relationship going to work after a year, mostly long distance, and once or twice a month "I love yous"

Is the relationship going to work after a year, mostly long distance, and once or twice a month "I love yous"?
I can tell that my bf of more than a year loves me from all of his actions and the way he listens. It just is wierd to hear that all my friends bf's are saying "I love you" to eachother way more than we do and talking about our future together is taboo...This would be all fine and dandy, but we will be going through the long distance thing (again) in a week. I am going to the U.S. for six months, and he will be staying in Austria to finish up school. It worked the first time amazingly, but since we barely say these words, and are out of the honeymoon stage, will this time be worse? or could it still be the same? HELP!

I would just be open and honest with him and yourself! My guy is not a very wordzy kinda person. But if I ask him questions like "do you see us being together for the long-term" he always says "yes! why did you think I didn't!" Some guys just dont communicate their feelings well. But actions show he wants to be with you if he is commited to you when you are far away from eachother. It should work i think if you both want it too. Best of luck! :) !
2 :
If you love each other enough, you could last. It's not wrong to say I love you or have future plans( well discussing future plans are something you could avoid because most of these plans doesn't happen). If you and your bf rarely communicate, there is a chance it would result to a break up. That is if you are not seeing each other, I mean, yeah you maybe far from each other but you see each other every 3 months or so, something like that. Actually, long distance relationships do work, but if it stays that way, you may fall out of love easily. It actually happened to me, since we're not seeing each other so often, (like we only see each other every 6 months when school's out) I happen to flirt around, but I stuck with my bf. I never committed myself to anybody else. Communication will keep your relationship going, and if you lack communication, you are most likely to break up... believe me. It's actually happening to me right now and I feel awful.

http://www.mises.org/lostpapers.asp In a dramatic discovery at the end of the Cold War, Ludwig von Mises's papers from his life and work in Vienna, Austria, were found in a formerly secret Soviet archive in Moscow. The papers are Mises's personal and professional archives from 1900 to the mid-1930s, a time of explosive intellectual and political development, when he battled national and international socialism on all fronts, and laid the groundwork for his great defense of the free economy and society. What's more, the very same Moscow archive contains the papers of Mises's associates, both friends and opponents from politics and academic life. All these papers are essential in helping to piece together the story of Mises's years as one of Europe's intellectual giants. In 1938, when the Nazis made their move into Austria, Mises had already been teaching in Geneva at the Institute for International Studies for four years. The German police entered Mises's Vienna apartment (where he had stopped for a short visit only weeks earlier), examined his papers, packed them into 38 boxes, and took them away. That isn't the whole article; there is more on the link. The Austrian School is the same economic thought that Ron Paul follows. Figured not many people would answer this. R.J., perhaps. That is a reasonable theory. Doesn't explain why they would take the work physically FROM him and put it in a secret vault..... and in either scenario, it's favorable for the Austrian School...

Because they're Nazis and they hate freedom, and freedom is what his economics supported.

same reason they burned libraries. To bury the truth.

I agree with the other answers (first 3). And this reminds me of the disappearance of Nikola Tesla's papers from his estate. Just after his death, gov't men-in-black muscled their way in to his Manhattan home and carted off his life's works. The question is: Why? Same in this case. Thanks!!! ...

How interesting and you should have some more answers. The Nazis were very paper oriented and interested in a ton of stuff from all over. Not sure what they were up to and will have to research. It would be interesting if they were going to use that to solidify the entire area once the Germans had been settled in all the occupied lands. I see no reason why they would suppress his studies.

Do people from other countries hate Americans?
I've been thinking of finding work in a different country, say Korea, Austria, Ethiopia, Colombia, etc. How would a boss from a country like those treat a well educated American. Say it's in engineering and I have my bach or master's. Would they discriminate?

Best place to visit in Austria

Best place to visit in Austria?
Hi all, due to my kind of work I don't get much time off and I like to travel when I can on the weekends, since I can't cover much ground, I would like your suggestions on what is the best place/city/town to visit in Austria for 2 days. Thanks a tonne!!

It depends a lot on your particular interests, but I often travel on weekends from northern Italy and particularly like Vienna and Salzburg as short breaks in Austria. There's plenty to see and do. For example, in Salzburg, you can spend a day seeing the town, and then get to Hellbrun and some of the sights out of the city on the 2nd day. They're also relatively easy to get to from here using the trains. I do, however, look for local festivals that might be going on. Another possibility is Innsbruck - I spent a very nice day there but am not sure what I would have done for a 2nd day.
2 :
I would say for shopping Pandorf and for visiting Salzburg if you love the Sound of Music which was filmed there
3 :
viena, is the best place and saltzburg

i think no.maybe you can chech it at www.sonyericson.com
2 :
It all depend upon the network provider ask them for this
3 :
first you must have international roam then ask your mobile company their system is compatible with those countries
4 :
- Dual/tri/quad bands are all GSM frequency bands, which are basically the frequency ranges that GSM mobile phones can work in. Your phone is tri band, it supports GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 frequencies. - GSM 900 and 1800 phones can be used in most parts of the world: Europe, Middle East, Africa and most of Asia - GSM 1900 phones are used in USA, Canada and many other countries in America. The countries you're planning on travelling to, fit into these bands. - Before you go though, if you're planning on using a foreign sim card in your phone, make sure you've had the phone unlocked. Or if you're gonna be using your UK sim in it, then call your network provider and ask them to set you up for international roaming, and advise you of the call/text charges, and maybe they could set you up on an international package that would suit your calling/texting needs when abroad. Hope this has helped and enjoy your holiday :)

Do Virgin Mobile phones work in Europe? England, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany

Do Virgin Mobile phones work in Europe? England, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany,...?
...Italy, Spain, Austria? We will visit all the above countries within 30 days. Would we need to rent phones for each country?
Other - Europe - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No. European phones use a system called GSM, and Virgin Mobile uses an incompatible system called CDMA. All European countries use the same GSM system, so the same phone will work in all of them. Get a cheap phone in the first country you visit, load it up with a reasonable amount of airtime, and just use it. I've bought an adequate phone in the UK for 10 pounds ($16) and the airtime cost about 30 cents/min in the UK and 50 cents/min in other countries.
2 :
I believe there's also a phone carrier called Virgin Mobile in the UK, but the US incarnation is different. Virgin Mobile USA uses Sprint's network, and their phones use CDMA technology (just like Sprint's). In Europe, there's no CDMA service, so your phone won't work there. You could try asking Virgin Mobile USA's customer service whether they have any kind of rental agreement with a European carrier, so that you could rent a phone in Europe and pay for calls out of your current balance, but even if they do, it'll probably be cheaper to just find a cheap phone to rent or buy once you get there. The good news is you shouldn't need to get a separate phone for each country. All of Europe uses GSM technology on the same radio frequencies, and once you have a phone that works in any European country, it should work in all of them.
3 :
Q. Can I use my Virgin Mobile phone if I am traveling outside the United States? A.Our coverage area includes all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. At this time, our phones won't work on networks outside that area. Sorry. Reference: www.virginmobileusa.com/help/helpDetails.do?tier=service&categoryId=37&topicId=293 *** You may want to consider T-Mobile's 'World Class' service. You can either rent or activate service with a T-Mobile phone. I didn't like the gifts he sent. What should I say?
Hey everyone. I've been in Austria for work for 6 months. It was my birthday a week ago and my boyfriend had a teddy bear he'd made himself sent over, a pair of ballet slippers, some money and a photo frame with a picture of us in it. The bear was dressed to be a lady farmer and was really cute. He also made a matching male farmer for himself too. When I get back to Australia we're going to live on a farm together. His gifts were okay, but I was expecting something better, nicer and more exclusive like jewelery. What should I say when he calls to ask if I liked the gifts? As you can tell I'm a little dissapointed right now.

Well, this is one of those situations where lying is not bad. It seems to me that he put a lot of thought and effort into what he got you. If you tell him you didn't like it, then he will definitely get upset. Sometimes us guys give great gifts and sometimes we don't. Just remember the old saying about how its the thought that counts. I'm sure it won't always be like that, and if you really care for each other, then gifts should not matter that much.

Moving to Austria: What should an English-speaking American do about jobs, college, getting settled, etc

Moving to Austria: What should an English-speaking American do about jobs, college, getting settled, etc?
I want to move to Austria for a year, perhaps even permanently. I'm 20 and currently have an Associates Degree in Social Science. (I know It isn’t much, but I figure it's helpful if I give a few details about myself.) I'm only fluent in English; I am in the process of learning German but am by no means fluent in it. It is giving me a lot of trouble, I fear I won't fully understand it until I've lived around it. Now I'm aware that you need a visa to live in another country for any long period of time. I also know that in order to gain citizenship in another country you generally have to live there for several years; in Austria I believe it’s five years. What I don’t know is about working and school. I'll need money to live obviously. I'm sure I can find a place to stay, but would an English-speaking American even be able to find a job? If so, what suggestions do you have as to where to look? Also, are there any English-speaking schools I could attend? Any advice or facts would be great!

Help finding cheap airline tickets

Help finding cheap airline tickets?
I'm trying to plan a one-month trip to Salzburg, Austria to work on my German. I can go pretty much any time between February and August of next year, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of a website where you can just choose your destination and they can show you cheap tickets from a variety of dates and times. So for example, if I type in "Salzburg, Austria", it might give me a date and the cheap ticket associated with it. If you don't know of a site like this or don't understand what I'm getting at, any good travel websites (expedia, priceline, etc.) would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most flight booking sites allow queries with flexible dates. Usually flexible dates are limited to a few days (1 to 3). It works perfectly. This is very helpful. Some of the above mentioned booking sites allow the kind of flexibility you are looking for. For instance, Travelocity allows flexible dates of several months. Then you get then a list of selected airlines and prices for your destination. When you select one of those companies, you get a calendar with the cheapest dates available. I found such a large flexibility does not always work properly. Check it and make up your mind. (For august, it is probably too early) Finding online the cheapest flight for you is the job of flight booking sites. The best ones are listed here: http://www.willgoto.com/1/023798/liens.aspx No hidden fees. Include low cost airlines in your query when possible .

What would be an appropriate gift for a Indian wedding

What would be an appropriate gift for a Indian wedding?
I'm going to attend a wedding in India, Chennai to be precisely, in February, however, I have no clue what is custom to give in as a present in India. They haven't registered anywhere? Can someone tell me a good gift idea, or steer me in the right direction? I was thinking something typical from Austria, since the bride worked for our company for 2 months as an intern!? i dunno how it works in india. but back in malaysia , we indians give money or you could give a bouquet of flowers.
3 :
What is Austria famous for? Sorry for my ignorance. I think cookoo clock?. Anyway, you can bring one of that or give them money. Because you do not know what kind of set up they will have after marriage, unlike Europe or UK. In some cases they stay with parents, though that is changing nowadays. Bridal registry? Ha, unheard of in India. It is more of a western country method. Again, I must say it is changing. You can ask the bride if you wish as to whether they have a bridal registry. I doubt that highly.
4 :
If you can't find the right gift, give them money. It's always appreciated, make sure you add a $1 to the end amount as this symbolizes good luck(i.e. $101 etc...)
5 :
get them flowers, chocolate box, money and some asian sweets or jewellery X
6 :
well, any gift of good quality would be appreciated in any culture when the wedding party is aware that there will be guests of different cultures attending :) a gift from Austria would be quite cool (in my opinion) as I'm sure a bride of an Indian wedding will have plenty of indian friends + family to supply gifts of that culture. for any wedding in general, dinnerware items (perhaps in designs common in Austria), quality home design items (austrian vase), and of course a generous amount in money is usually well-recieved (esp. since these things can be re-gifted when the couple visits other families and such) in Indian culture...you might interested to know that common gift items include golden jewelery sets and high-quality + brightly colored cloth material for "sarees" and custom tailored clothing of that sort (check out below) that have lots of embroidery + work on them just make sure it's good quality and potentially re-giftable...a good rule of thumb for any party :) have fun and good luck!

how to arrange to work in japan as a farmer

how to arrange to work in japan as a farmer?
i live in austria (city) and would like to experience rural life... and i always wanted to travel inside japan, so combining it i come to ask you all ^^ Sorry for your trouble reading my silly question...

You cannot simply go to Japan and start working. You need a Visa from the Japanese Government to be allowed to work there. To get such a visa, you need to have University degree, as well as an employer who will sponsor you. You cannot look for such employer on 'Temporary Visitor' Status, and can only be obtained from outside Japan.
2 :
If you'd like to work as a farmer in Japan easily, you need to get married with Japanese citizen. You don't need any particular degree or money. It is the best and only one realistic solution..
3 :
Try the site below. You can work on a organic farm. You won't be paid, but they will give you room and board for your work. These are real farms & not for tourists looking for fun. Not a silly question if you're serious about working. I've heard some of these farms are so far inland they can't even watch TV.
4 :
You can come to Japan and "volunteer" on a farm in rural parts of Japan under the WWOOF program. WWOOF is a means to friendship, travel & experience has entirely nothing to do with money or employment, because of this, you can come to Japan as a "Temporary Visitor" (Tourist Visa), because you are not getting paid any money, but you get a chance to experience rural Japan and working on a farm. About 20% of people who WWOOF are temporary visitors/tourists. Citizens of Austria are allowed to stay in Japan for up to 6 months or less under the Visa Waiver program as a Temporary visitor. My friend from France (who lives in Tokyo now) did WWOOF in a rural part of Japan around Shikoku, he said it was hard but he enjoyed it. Check it out here: http://www.wwoofjapan.com

If you don't need to work and have enough money it should be a lot of fun, i went to the Netherlands it wasn't a party finding work, dealing with the government - car licence, accommodation, permission to stay, registration, paying bills, the language barrier setting up a bank account being thrown into the gutter when sick by a girlfriend etc, while people supported by a big company have all this provided. Look German is my third language and find it to be a very big ( many words ) language, and ( with the very up most respect to the German people ) because my understanding or lack there of - i find it a bit monotone and very fast spoken language, and its a very intelligent language ( maybe why i haven't mastered it yet. If you are Yong and have somewhere to stay even better if you have some family there - it would be a westerners dream accomplishment . If when you are over there and need advice just contact me on steenenterprise@yahoo.com i can even read a bit of German , i would be interested to know how you are going in Germany . Pregnant: What to do when my boyfriend lives on a different continent

Pregnant: What to do when my boyfriend lives on a different continent?
So, I first met my boyfriend while we were both in Germany. I was there as an exchange student (I'm American) and he was visiting relatives (he's Austrian). We were just casual acquaintances/friends at first, but then things escalated at a slow pace. Fast forward nine years. I'm done with my education and I have a job. I visit my fella, or he visits me, whenever we can afford it in both time and money. We've been considering marriage at this point, but neither of us has quite worked out such details as what country we'd both be willing to live in. The last time he visited me was in August. Just a couple of days back I found that I'm nine weeks pregnant, and he's gone back home. I have no idea how to tell him, especially since I plan on keeping the baby. He's a good person and has been absolutely loyal, but I know that while the fact that I'm pregnant might not be distressing on its own, he's not going to like it that both his kid and their mother lives on an entirely different continent and that he can't spend as much time as he likes with his family. I need a good way to tell him, but I also need to know what legal issues might arise because of the fact that neither of us is a legal resident of the other's country (which might complicate child support/custody issues), as well as the fact that our child will likely be a dual citizen. I don't know much about how family law works in Austria and what rights my boyfriend has for our baby, which contributes to the problem. Help?

I am not sure about anything except that if things don't work out you will want to look into the laws of the country because it is likely he could take your child and you would have little or no ability to get the child back. I am sure you can work it out but you should talk to a lawyer to make sure you understand all you need to.
2 :
My recommendation would be to contact the US consulate in Austria before you tell him because they would be likely to be able to answer all the necessary questions you may have. That way you'll be able to go over the details of residency and so on which should make things easier for the both of you. Calling him and telling him with no idea as to what to expect will just be more stressful. Tel.: (+43-1) 31339-0 E-mail: embassy@usembassy.at
3 :
to know about the legal issues you'll have to speak to someone who really knows! but I think once the shock wears off that you are pregnant he will want to come to the US and live with his newly formed family. I wish my son's father lived in another continent!

in italy there are a fantastic castles, you should will go to italy to visit the castles.....
2 :
No, there are impressive castles in all the countries here. There are a large number of excellent castles in Denmark and the Czech Republic, for example. You might want to look up Egeskov Castle, Kronborg Castle, Frederiksborg castle, Prague Castle, Karlstejn Castle, the Castle in Cesky Krumlov, and many others.
3 :
The castles in Bavaria ( a lower part of Germany, touching Austria and the Cezech Republic ) are beautiful, very cheap, and most of the tours can be taken in English, or there will be an English pamphlet. There's an expecially beautiful castle in Passau. Ludwig of Bavaria built some impressive castles in Germany - such as Neushwanstein, which inspired the Disney Castle ( it's not much to look at inside ), Gardens in Munich, a replica of the Palace at Versailles out on an Island at Chimsee, and another I can't recall. As for the Czech Republic, Karlstejn Castle is beautful, in a small little town that sells really nifty stuff! There's a chapel at Karlstejn as well that's well-known in the Art History community but it has a waiting list to get into because of something to do with the room being damaged by people breathing. I wouldn't reccomend going to Prague Castle simply because it's so crowded. A lot of Asian tourists are there and a lot of different languages, rarely English, are being thrown around. In Austria, the castle in Salzburg is by far, the most beautiful I've been to. There's a back pathway you can take to the castle littered with old castle walls and gorgeous homes that look like mini-castles. From the castle itself, there's a great view of Salzburg ( a city famous for being where "The Sound of Music" was filmed ).
4 :
No. The countries you mention have some great castles, but you are missing out on some important ones. The UK and Ireland have some great castles, same goes for Czech Republic, Poland and the Scandinavian countries. Two places that I can really recommend seeing are The Tower of London and the Alhambra in Granada, Spain.

does long distance relatioship work when you guys live oceans away

does long distance relatioship work when you guys live oceans away?
well i met this guy online. i'm 22 and he is 21. i live in singapore and he lives in austria i can meet him in person a few times a year cuz i can get the cheapest air plance ticket. we talk on webcam for hours everyday. i like him but it's a pain that i cannot touch him. all my friends told me that online relationship is no good. i'm confused..... do you think i should break up with him and look for someone who lives in my town or do you think it's worth giving it a try? have you ever done that before? how did it work?

3 :
I've done this before. And I stopped doing online dating because it didn't work out. I also fell inlove once that was oceans away but I fell out of love because it just wasn't working out right. You can't really do anything with each other, other than type. You might be able to see him over the webcam, but it's not the same as actually being there. It'd be best for you to try and look for someone else nearby. Sorry if this brings you down.

my lady is currently in Austria and i am in Australia --- it can work BUT at some point one of you will have to move closer that is something for you to decide --- he should also make the effort to come to you no matter how much it costs ---- best wishes

it worked for me....but it only lasted for a half a year
7 :
The distance is too great. You are too young to be tied to someone who lives too far away from you to where you can't enjoy quality time when you need to. Unless one of yall plan on moving don't waste your time.
8 :
Long distance relationships have never worked out for me...and mine where just different towns...but everyone is different...its just that u need to think about that he could have another girl anytime anyplace and u wouldnt kno about her...just give it some thought...it might work out and it might not...good luck
9 :
I met my bf online and I'm happy I did. It doesnt matter how far you are from each other as long as you have constant communication, trust and patience to one another. Love, trust and patience can keep love alive.
10 :
It does not sound very promising. You met him on line for one thing, so you can't know to much about his persona. Plus it just doesn't seem healthy to be in a relationship where you can't even get a hug when your feeling blue. However in the end, only you can say whether he matters enough to make it work, or to go on to something else.
11 :
try both. he'd be unreasonable if you find someone, in person. how faithful are you? if you ask people about the relationship, you're not all that confident about your relationship. try dating others in your city, if it doesn't work, what do you have to lose. just be honest with him if you meet another guy and the new guy works.
12 :
The possibility of LD relationship to workout is very very small. It might be 1 in 50. I was in it before and it didn't work out. I live in Indonesia and my ex-bf was went to university in Melbourne. For the first few weeks, we keep contact each other everyday, chatting and text message. Few months later, we contact once a week. Sometimes even I cannot find him at all. But my case is different, I already know the guy before. You met him online. Do you know him really well? Can you trust his words? Did he honest with you? You never know whether he will hook up with others in there or is there any other online relationship he had with others? Some of my friends also involve in LD relationship and most of them didn't work out. It is all depend on your decision whether your want to keep this relationship or not. You need to really considering few aspects.

Alberta has no more taxes and got the oil frenzy... They need a lot of workers there... But housing is pretty expensive now, as they can't expend as fast as they need too. Ontario, like Toronto, is the financial city of Canada. All companies have their seat there, but it is a pretty boring city for an European... Also Housing is crazy high, and people not too much friendly. They also a little bit backyard or conservative in ideology... Vancouver is Beautiful, but most business are own by Asian migrants, and may have trouble to be understood there. But golf around and the weather is the very best Canada can offer. Quebec province is the most European of the place, but must speak french. Food is better, architecture is similar to Europe, culture closer too, and night life much more dynamic than anywhere else in Canada... Edit: Quebec don't like immigrants... Funny, it is why we have about 110 different spoken tongues in Montreal... Have a Chinatown and the largest Italian population in north America... Yeh right, the guy below me, need to be educated, English Canadian have read so much BS about Quebec, it is unbelievable...
2 :
Alberta is in an oil boom. Toronto is always good. Vancouver. Probably any big city, so you can get your feet wet and then after living there a year you can choose for yourself. Just don't go to Quebec....they don't like immigrants or non-french-speaking people.
3 :
I suggest Alberta, British Columbia or Ontario. Alberta - A good economy and good employment prospects. The Rocky Mountains are at your doorstep if you live in Calgary or Edmonton (the two main cities) so you can take day-trips or weekend breaks to the mountains for hiking, skiing, camping... etc.. Coming from Austria you would likely feel very at home there. The cities of Calgary and Edmonton are both rated very high in terms of safety and friendliness. British Columbia - The economy is not as good as Alberta and the job prospects are not brilliant either. Vancouver however is a fantastic city, set on the ocean. Vancouver Island is only a short ferry ride away. The beauty of British Columbia is incredible. You have mountains, ocean, valley's and plains. Again, there are winter sports and summer sports readily available all around. Ontario - Is probably the very best place for finding work as it is the centre of Canadian industry. Ontario is where the seat of government and commerce are based, therefore the opportunities to find employment is very high. The lifestyle in Ontario is very good (as it is in all of Canada), and you could enjoy access to urban lifestyle or a more rural country lifestyle. All the best with your move! Canada is beautiful from coast-to-coast.
4 :
Living in Vienna, you may be someone who speaks French as one of your languages. If that is true, you might consider the French Canadian section of Canada. Your English is good enough for survival so it isn't really a problem for you, only a matter of preference. Good fortune to you and your family. My family came to the US through Canada more than 100 yrs. ago. There are certain citizenship differences in Canada that are different from the US. Being a subject of England is only one of them.

Best place to work in Europe

Best place to work in Europe?
I'm not talking profession wise, but just country wise, which country has less unemployment? Which one would you recommend expating to? I'm thinking along the lines of Germany/Austria,Norway,Ireland. (I'm also a German Citizen so I can work anywhere in the EU) Any tips would be appreciated as well.

Holland, Luxembourg and Austria have the lowest unemployment rates. Norway's is probably lower but its not in the EU. And the weather there is appaling. Out of those I'd probably go for Austria- for the mountains and the food (chocolate cake and schnitzel...) over Holland
2 :
Germany/Austria would require you to speak very good German, so regardless of your citizenship, if you can't speak the language, you are not employable. Ireland doesn't have much work at the moment, but you could try. There may be language issues in Norway also.

Mountainous Regions of France and Work

Mountainous Regions of France and Work?
Hi there, I am trying to find out, what parts are the most mountainous and popular. By this I mean, what are some major cities that are situated in/near mountains? Also, are there any cities in particular that generally have more jobs than other areas? I am planning to go to France to work, and I would prefer to be in the mountains (grew up in Austria), but mainly I am looking for a nice city that may offer a decent job. Any knowledge you can share about France would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

What are the bad things about living in Austria

Well that depends. If you're wondering whether Austria is a dangerous country: the simple answer is no. Although there can be occasional issues like anywhere, it is a very safe country. One bad thing can be the welcome you receive from the Austrian themselves. They can come across as a little cold and close-minded, but usually it's not much of an issue. The worst nasty people will do to you is probably sneer. If you don't speak German, then that could be an issue outside of Vienna or other big towns, and they're often unwilling to make the effort to understand you. That can be a bit grinding. Other than that, I don't really think there's all that much that would make anyone recoil in horror. Think positive! Think Schnitzel, fries and chocolate cake!
2 :
There really is nothing "bad" about it. It's the same as living in Canada or the US. Canada might be perhaps a bit more open minded and liberal. Small town Austria is hard to get into a group, but by and large, they will treat you as you treat them. The weather is like in the northern US or southern Canada, the food is very good, and the country offers a lot to see. Here is a link to prices and cost of living in general: http://www.aboutaustria.org/living/cost.htm and http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/living/living_abroad/living_in_austria.shtml

Learn the grammar/sentence structure before trying to master every word. It will help a lot and is important to keep in mind while learning. You need to practice outside of the classroom too, think about translating things you hear into German and practice pronouncing it when you are alone.
2 :
The best way to learn a language is to completely immerse yourself in it. Limit what you hear, speak, read (ect) in English and try to listen to everything in German. Rent German movies, listen to online radio stations in German, have your family only speak to you in German and you reply in only German (except when you need corrections in grammar or word usage). You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll pick up the language.
3 :
It's good if you're going to that country since it's much easier to learn the language when you surround yourself in it. But since you want to get a head start, you could take some classes that offer the language. If you don't want to do that then you can also buy/check out books that involve teaching you the language, as well as dictionaries. Go to Amazon since it's really cheap there: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=learning+german&x=0&y=0 Find some catchy songs to sing to (children's song are the best!), make flash cards, talk to your family! Practice, practice, practice.
4 :
Immersion is the best thing you can do. It's good that you are going to Austria and Germany to stay a little while. Even if your family is all German and speak German, if you live in an anglophone (or other language) culture, you are likely to forget a lot of your German from disuse. If you grew up around the German language though, it is highly likely it's all in there somewhere, but you have to cultivate it again for it to be come out. Listening to the radio in the language you want to learn helps a lot, as does reading and writing in that language. But immersion is really the best, because then you have no choice but to learn that language to survive! Unfortunately Germans are often excellent English speakers - so resist the temptation to speak English when you're there!
5 :
try these sites: http://www.foreignlanguagesoftwarereviews.com/learn-german/learn-german-the-easy-way/ http://easygermanlessons.com/ I learned japanese through japanese pod101 and absolutely loved it. Maybe german pod101 will be the same for you. http://www.germanpod101.com/
6 :
If you are a beginner, I would stay away from flashcard methods like Rosetta Stone, Babbel, BYKI, etc. Those methods are good to build vocabulary knowledge but otherwise it has its limitations as a beginner's tool. Knowing many words does not mean you know the language. I would recommend you look into Pimsleur's courses, which are a great tool for beginners. It focuses on conversational skills not just words. It will train your ear to understand natives (very important for a new learner), allow you to speak with very good pronunciation and acquire the core structures and grammar of the language. Their method does not tie you down to a computer, you can do it on the go, in the car, on your iPod, during your commute, etc. This may or may not be an advantage to you. Lastly, I find that it does very well with new students as it is a real confidence builder, which is essential for new students. Good luck.
